5 Ways to Be More Confident in Any Situation

Do you hide yourself away from social situations, or struggle with trying new things, and or perhaps avoiding things you find challenging? Do you feel that you need to take yourself out of a situation where other people undermine your abilities or you need to challenge limiting beliefs that you have formed over the years? It is time to work on your self-confidence.

Self-confidence refers to assuredness in your own power and ability to overcome any kind of situation. It is an attitude about your skills and abilities. It means accept and trust yourself and have a sense of control in your life. So, if you don’t have a strong sense of belief in yourself, the following are 5 ways will help you to be more confident.

1. Get rid of Negative Thoughts

Negative thoughts make you feel blue about yourself, the world, and the future. Negative thoughts contribute to low self-worth, make you feel you are not effective in the world and link to depression, anxiety, chronic worry, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Negative self-talk can be incredibly damaging to your self-esteem, especially if it’s a big part of your daily life.  Therefore, it is important that you know how to replace negative thoughts with positive ones. You need to learn how to get rid of thoughts that make you feel insecure, which usually pop-up in your mind.

In fact, you need to learn to be aware of your self-talk, when it’s negative, and be able to get rid of it. Instead of nursing them, you can think all the amazing things that happen to you and focus on them. Even though it’s not easy to do so, with a little training you can control your mind over insecurities and negative ideas. The good news is that you can change your self-talk any time you want.  You just have to know how to become aware of the tone of your messages and consciously replace them with more encouraging ones.

Try these simple steps for starters:

a. Develop awareness of your self-talk.  It may take practice, but if you watch of your inner voice, you will notice when you talk negatively to yourself.

b. Challenge the negative messages.  When you notice the negative thoughts popping up, stop yourself and challenge that belief.  Is that really true?  Maybe you mess up sometimes, but do you mess up all the time?  Probably not.

c. Replace the negative messages with positive messages.  When you notice you are saying unkind and untrue things to yourself, simply turn it around in your mind.  Tell yourself opposite of the message and affirm it.

As you put efforts to get rid of negative thoughts, your efforts will pay off over the time and you will see yourself building stronger self-esteem and respect for yourself and your capabilities.  However, note that this will probably not happen overnight, but the more you work at turning your self-talk in a more positive direction, the better you will feel about yourself.

2. Focus on Solutions

If you focus more on problems and complain about them, they will be magnified. Anxious thoughts can blow problems out of proportion. Instead try to focus on finding possible solutions. Do not try to dwell on complaining nor self-pity. Rather, you need to change your focus as soon as possible. For example, instead of trying to figure out why you are facing a difficult situation, you can try to find the best solutions you can implement to resolve the problem. By trying to find new ideas that will help you with your problem, you will see yourself building your self-confidence and trust in your abilities.

3. Get Prepared

Maybe you have a speaking engagement or presentation, or any task you are not comfortable with. You may think that you are not going to perform well at and as a result, your confidence level will drop. You can overcome this feeling by preparing as much as possible for any hard situation. For example, if you need to make a presentation for your work in front of an audience, you need to be well prepared; learn everything about your subject and study as much as you can. With this, you will be able to perform better, and you will eventually feel more confident about yourself.

4. Set Small Goals

Many people usually make the mistake of making big plans and when the big plan fails, they get easily discouraged. Yes, it is great to ‘dream big’, but it is better to break the big dream into small goals that will help you to achieve the big dream. Breaking your big goal into small manageable goal will help to create small wins towards the big goal.

Achieving the small wins is critical to motivate you, monitoring and tracking incremental accomplishments and achievements as it allows you to notice and pay attention to the present moment. Your journey of achievement is sometimes more important than the end goal.’ The small wins will give you more joy and you will feel more powerful in achieving your small goals. As a result, soon you will be building your self-confidence.

5. Know Yourself Better

The only enemy you have when you are trying to overcome a negative self-image and replace it with confidence is yourself. So, it’s crucial to get to know yourself well. For example, you can start by listening to your thoughts and try to analyse them. Spend time reflecting on what makes you who you are and make a list of those qualities that distinguish you as a unique person. Get to know your personal strengths and add those to your list.

Review your list carefully. Do not define yourself based on circumstances or shallow qualities that can change, such as your body, your wealth, your career progression, your clothes, your friends or your car. Circumstances can take these things away. So, if your confidence rests on them, you will lose your confidence along with them if you lose them. Therefore, base your confidence on what will never change; the true essence of who you are as a person. Confidence that is based on your true qualities, and not your daily activities or a shallow sense of self, is unshakeable.
